Seen below is a cast of the thumb claw of Megaraptor. In life, it would have been covered with a keratin sheath, making it longer and sharper than the bone itself. This claw is a favored plaything of the Assistant Curator, along with the Therizinosaurus claw cast. Luckily, these casts are made of resin, and not likely to do any damage to the Assistant Curator, furniture, or other specimens.
When first discovered, the large, sickle shaped claw was mistaken for the of a dromaeosaur (hence the ‘raptor’ in the name). A later discovery of a complete forelimb showed that the sickle claw belonged not on the foot, but on the hand. What Megaraptor’s exact classification is a bit of a puzzle, though the most recent studies place it in it’s own group of very specialized allosaurids, the Megaraptorans. Most of these animals appear to have similar elongated hand claws, which could have been used for hunting or possibly fishing, in the manner spinosaurids would.
To date, no complete megaraptorid has been found, though a few generalizations can be made from the parts recovered. Overall, these animals were lightly built, and probably led an active, predatory lifestyle. A more complete megaraptorid, Aerosteon, shows evidence of sizable air sacs throughout its body. These would have made respiration much more efficient, and no unlike that of modern birds. Again, this gives the impression of active predators as opposed to more specialized scavengers or fishers.
