Crinoids have been around for millions of years, and can still be found in the world’s oceans. Our specimen is beautifully preserved, with the arms distinct and the stem intact. Crinoids are echinoderms, meaning they are related to sea stars and sea urchins.

Crinoids are also called sea lillies, for good reason. They are often brightly colored, and do resemble the flowers for which they are named. Crinoids come in two varieties: stalked and non-stalked. Scytalocrinus is the former variety. There are around 600 types of crinoid around today, though there were many more in the past.
